Artist Statement

Within my practice, I am intrigued by the ways in which I can produce works to challenge the Cornish fine art canon. I strive to move away from romanticised depictions and instead try to paint my motherland as I see it, and how I have experienced it both in childhood and as a young adult. My work aspires to show what I would regard as the “true” Cornwall—the contemporary realities of living in a place which has been decimated by second-home owners and tourism industries, we are underrepresented politically, underfinanced, and our residents and youth feel a jarring disconnect from mainstream British society, and, within fine art contexts, perpetuated through both populist tastes and the gatekeeping of information, authentic representations are often excluded as they are not what is enjoyed by the general masses, and do not fit within the polished “tourist haven” ideology or image.

In an ever-divided Cornwall, I aspire that my work can help shed light on the truth to wider audiences about our growing cultural difficulties in the face of ridicule and belittling. I hope to make those from within the county feel seen and recognise themselves through my attempts to depict life as truthfully as I can.

I work predominantly in oils, exploring the ways in which images can be altered and manipulated and by appropriating the language of digital imagery I investigate how digital medias can be replicated in analogue mediums. In an age where technology is dominant, I want to preserve the physicality of painting while using the visual language of digital media to carry my message. In the same way that the media has distorted and washed the public perception of rural areas of outstanding beauty, I alter my imagery to become distorted and warped, whilst intertwining the work with humour, which I feel is vital to conveying message whilst avoiding sounding “preachy”.
